This scene is terrifying, coming within inches of horror. Skirting with the idea of an abusive relationship whilst still viewing it through the semi-fantasy lens. I went through page after page after page in the Ruby Sparks tag and found nothing about it, not an image, gif, screencap or thought on it. Which annoyed me because it is the most important scene of the whole film.

It’s uncomfortable, gripping and shows the end result of Calvin’s view of their relationship; emotional and physical abuse of someone he scarcely sees as a person.He doesn’t let her leave, he forces her against her will, makes her crawl on the ground like a dog and you can see in his face that he enjoys it.

It’s the perfect climax for the film, ending with him setting her free from his will. The very final scene of the film left me cold in light of what happens here; that after all of the above abuse he’s given a second chance with her. Assuming that the Ruby he meets again at the end is indeed the same Ruby he created.

All you get are the cute moments, the quirky lines and smiles. Ruby Sparks is so much more than the film it was marketed as.
